Vandy's Franklin resists temptation to call plays

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is fighting the temptation to call the plays for his offense. He says coordinator John Donovan will handle that job for now.

Franklin said Monday he's not sure that will last the entire season and he reserves the right to suggest plays during games for the Commodores.

But Franklin says he has confidence in Donovan, who called the plays in Maryland's 51-20 win over East Carolina in the Military Bowl.

Senior Larry Smith also will be the starting quarterback Saturday night against Elon. Franklin had not named a starter until Monday, but the coach says Smith had the advantage over Jordan Rodgers of working in spring practice. Smith has started the past two seasons.
