CAUGHT ON TAPE: Sheriff stops police chase with patrol car

Posted: Updated:

TRENTON, DADE COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - We're getting the first look at dash cam video taken during a police chase in Dade County earlier this week.

The suspect, Hillard Allen Stevens, is accused of threatening to kill Sheriff Patrick Cannon and other county officials.

In the video, obtained by Channel 3, you can hear sirens blaring and see lights flashing as officers follow a white Ford Ranger.

The chase comes to an end when Cannon uses his red patrol car to ram the truck, forcing it to come to a stop.

Multiple officers then approach the truck with guns drawn, but Stevens surrenders. Later you see officers search his truck and find a loaded gun and 300 rounds of shotgun shells in the front seat.

"We believe his full intentions were to kill myself, Judge McCormick and others," said Sheriff Cannon, in an interview with Channel 3 Friday afternoon.

Hillard Stevens remains in the Dade County Jail, without bond. He has been there before, arrested multiple times for animal cruelty.

Cannon says threatening officers, their families, and judges, is a crime that should come with stiffer punishment.

"We definitely are going to make sure that he remains incarcerated," he said.

Hours before his arrest, Stevens was scheduled to report to his probation officer. He now faces violation of probation and felony eluding arrest charges. The GBI is working to file additional charges, most are expected to be felony charges.
