ERIN HILLS, Wisc. (UTC/WRCB) -- Chattanooga senior Stephan Jaeger took 2011 NCAA Champion John Peterson to the brink Thursday before losing a close match on the 18th hole at the United States Amateur at Erin Hills Golf Club.
Peterson advanced to the round of 16 with a birdie on the 675-yard par-five closing hole.
Recently departed University of Georgia golfer Harris English, who like Jaeger is a former Baylor School star, was also eliminated in the round of 32 with a 4 and 3 loss to Bobby Leopold.
Jaeger started the day by finishing off Blayne Barber for a 3 and 2 win in an opening round match that was called because of darkness Wednesday night.
In the round of 32, neither Jaeger nor Peterson led by more than one hole. After four straight halved holes to start the back nine, Peterson birdied 15 for a one-hole lead with three to play. Two later, Jaeger struck back with a birdie on the 509-yard par four 17th to even it once again, setting the stage for Peterson's heroics.
The championship was was Jaeger's first U.S. Amateur appearance. Over the past four years, he has reached the round of 32 at the British Am twice (2009, 2010) to go with this year's U.S. Am.
