Cherokee County Sheriff warns locals of phone scams

Posted: Updated:

MURPHY, CHEROKEE COUNTY, NC. (WRCB)—The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office says an aggressive investigation is underway after phone scams conned some residents out of money.

Sheriff Keith Lovin says victims wired money via Western Union after receiving calls from individuals claiming to represent relatives who they say are in prison or disabled from a traffic accident.

Lovin says money was requested to aid the "relatives" and victims discovered the fraud after wiring the money.

The sheriff says two other locals received calls from individuals claiming to be insurance representatives. They requested money to release insurance funds to help family members involved in a serious accident.

However, Lovin says, the targeted victims made phone calls and found the requests had been an attempt to take their money.

A telephone number provided in one of the scam attempts is 205-588-3000.

The Sheriff's Office is warning residents not to reply to the scams and to call them with any information at 1-828-837-2589.
