Tennessee Highway Patrol seeks new troopers

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, TN (WRCB/AP) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol is recruiting applicants for trooper jobs.

All applications are online through the Tennessee Department of Human Resources.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old and have at least a high school education. Applications are being accepted until Aug. 26.

The beginning salary is $2,500 per month for cadets and $2,767 per month once commissioned. The cadet class lasts 18 weeks.

State officials say troopers with 10 years' experience can earn more than $49,000 per year under the current pay structure.

Lt. John Harmon said the State Patrol is an 18 week course that will require a dedicated person who is willing to move anywhere in the state.

"You are subject to being stationed anywhere in Tennessee, anywhere the need is," he said.

Contrary to belief, being a trooper is more than writing tickets.

Lt John Harmon said, "We are working crashes, we do school bus inspections, we do many things."

With working the roads, there are several dangers that come along with it. Each trooper is highly trained in driving and police tactics, but the risks, are also great.

Trooper Robert Hadden said, "That thought is with you everyday, every time you start your shift. You just have to rely on your training and experience."
