UPDATE: Officials identify woman killed in boating accident, still investigating

CHARLESTON, BRADLEY COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- Officials have identified the woman killed in a boating accident on the Hiwassee River.

Officials say the victim was 32-year-old Misty Thompson.

The boat Thompson was on was involved in an accident, Wednesday night, near the Charleston Boat Ramp, on Water Street.

Officials says Deontae Davis was driving the boat.

According to wildlife officers, their boat struck this sidewalk which provides access to the mooring cells barges are tied to while loading and unloading at the Bowater paper plant.

"It seems very unusual it would have happened.  They had to travel a considerable distance outside of the channel to strike these objects," says TWRA Officer Ben Davis.

There were witnesses on other watercraft who are helping investigators.  Conditions on the river were calm and relatively clear Wednesday night, and the sun hadn't yet gone down.

"Anything can happen.  I mean, buoys especially.  You could lose you attention for one minute and be on one, you know, real quick.  So, yeah, boat operation demands a lot of attention," says Steve Kite with Channel 3 Outdoors.

TWRA officers say they don't believe excessive speed was involved.  Nor do they think anyone was standing or doing anything out of the ordinary onboard.

They would not comment on whether or not alcohol was found on the boat.

Blood samples have been sent off to be tested, but it could be more than a month until the results are in.

Whether or not any charges will be filed in this case will be up to the District Attorney.
