Congressman holds town hall meeting, tours tornado damage

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA (WRCB)-- Georgia's ninth congressional leader is talking about the debt ceiling.

Congressman Tom Graves was in Catoosa County, Monday, to tour tornado-ravaged Ringgold.

First, he held a town hall meeting, which drew dozens of concerned voters.

While much of Ringgold still bears scars from April's storm, businesses are making a comeback.

"It's amazing to see the devastation, and now to be back and see the clean up that has occurred, the rebuilding, Ringgold is back open for business," says Graves.

Many residents here continue to struggle and they worry the recent vote to increase the nation's debt limit, could add to the hardships.

"We just need Washington to start listening. We pay them so much money. They have no idea what we have gone down to," says Beverly Collins.

"If you just keep wanting more money for the same service, its going to devalue the dollar, so our dollar doesn't buy as much," says Bonny Sinclair.

Speaking to a group of nearly 200 people, Congressman Graves, stood behind his vote against the budget control act, and in favor of changes to federal spending.

A move, the majority of attendees seemed to agree with.

Graves says his focus going forward is on the economy and creating jobs.

"Lets get the debt deficit issue out of the way, get spending under control and have an environment that's conducive to job creation," says Graves.

For residents like Jimmy Gray, the answer to the nation's financial problems is simple.

"It just has to get back to spending within your means, families have to do it, you have to do it, I have to do it, so why the government doesn't think it has to do it is beyond me," says Jimmy Gray.

Graves also fielded questions on the no child left behind act, medicare, and social security.

Graves will host town hall meetings in Whitfield, Pickens, and Murray Counties later this week.
