Haslam takes surprise trip to Iraq

BAGHDAD (NBC) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam is making a surprise trip to Iraq this week visiting troops from the Tennessee National Guard and Army National Guard.

Via satellite interview Tuesday, Haslam said he left the U.S. early Monday and will be visiting five or six bases in Kuwait and Iraq.

The governor has already visited Ali Al Salem Air Base, Camp Arifjan in Kuwait and  Joint Air Base Balad, Taji Air Base and Camp Victory in Baghdad.

He said early in his visit he is already appreciating the scope of the operation that the military is undertaking.  The governor has already talked to troops from Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Tullahoma and Memphis.
