MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - A Middle Tennessee State University history buff has written the foreword to the newly published memoirs of a Civil War veteran.

According to a news release from the school, the original volume was found behind a library shelf and brought to the attention of Lee Ann Newton, an executive aide at the school and a military history buff.

She wrote the foreword to "The Civil War Memoirs of Erastus Winters, Corporal, Company K, 50, O.V.I., Serving Uncle Sam in the 50th Ohio, 1861-1865," published in May by Cold River Press.

Newton said there are eloquent descriptions of the battles of Perryville and Franklin, the survival of the sinking of the Sultana and other topics.

Proceeds from the sale of the memoirs will benefit the Civil War Preservation Fund and others.
