EAST RIDGE, HAMILTON COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) – An Officer on scene of an accident finds himself involved in a wreck.

East Ridge Police responded to the 3200 block of Ringgold Rd to a tractor trailer wedged inside the tunnel, around 7pm Tuesday.

Officers arrived and closed the road in order to help in the removal of the truck.

Nearly 20 minutes after officers had closed the road a gray Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by James Edsell of East Ridge, TN., drove around officers and entered the tunnel. Officers yelled at the Edsell however he continued into the tunnel.

An Officer jumped into his patrol vehicle and attempted to catch up to the Monte Carlo to stop him from possibly hitting the truck or emergency workers inside.

As the Officer negotiated a blind curve at the entrance of the tunnel he found Edsell stopped in the roadway. The Officer attempted to avoid a crash but was unable to do so.

Edsell was transported to Erlanger Medical Center by Lifeguard EMS with serious but not believed to be life threatening injuries.

The Officer was taken to Parkridge East Hospital where he was treated and released.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene to investigate the crash as is departmental policy when an officer is involved in a motor vehicle crash.
