CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)—An accidental 911 call took an alleged drunk driver off the road over the weekend.
Executive Director of Hamilton County 911 Emergency Communications, John Stuermer, says the call was placed shortly after 3:00 Saturday morning.
Stuermer says 911 dispatcher King received the call and could hear several people on the line laughing and arguing over who was sober enough to drive home.
King quickly realized the caller didn't intend to dial 911, but remained on the line to gather information.
The operator was able to locate the caller in the 3800 block of Hixson Pike by using the 911 District's Computer-Aided-Dispatch (CAD) program.
After obtaining a vehicle description, King continued to provide updates on the location and direction of travel of the group in question.
Chattanooga Police eventually stopped a vehicle, they say, was "all over the road". King overheard someone acknowledge the traffic stop before the line went dead.
Stuermer says King called the phone and spoke with an unidentified woman who said the driver had abandoned her, not wanting to return her to her husband, who was behind the wheel of the stopped vehicle.
The director says the driver of that vehicle was arrested and charged with DUI.
