UPDATE: 6 people hospitalized after wrong-way freeway crash
EAST RIDGE, TN. (WRCB)—East Ridge Police are investigating a head-on collision involving three cars, they say, was caused by a man traveling in the wrong direction.
Police Spokesperson Eric Hopkins says the crash happened near the South Seminole overpass on Interstate 24, just after 3:45 Saturday morning.
Hopkins says an East Ridge Officer witnessed the driver of a black Dodge Ram hit a Pontiac Torrent head-on. A second car, following the Pontiac to Florida from Kentucky, was unable to avoid the crash
The officer at the scene says he was able to stop the driver of the truck as he attempted to flee.
Hopkins says the jaws-of-life were used to free at least one person in the Pontiac and a firefighter was treated for possible heat-exhaustion.
In all, Hopkins says, four adults and two children were taken to local hospitals.
The driver of the truck has not been identified because he provided police with two forms of identification, each listing different names.
He is charged with DUI, four counts of vehicular assault, six counts of reckless endangerment, implied consent law, and driving without a license.
