AL House Speaker expects court to target immigration law

HUNTSVILLE, AL. (AP) - Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard said he expects parts of the state's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants to be struck down.

The lawmaker told the Madison County Republican Men's Club on Saturday that he was proud of the legislation, but he acknowledged that the law may not survive legal scrutiny.

He said "some parts of that law may be struck down," but added that lawmakers are prepared to tweak the legislation if necessary.

Supporters of the law say it's needed to limit the number of illegal immigrants living in Alabama. Critics including immigrant support groups and faith-based workers have filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the law.
