UPDATE: Bradley murder suspect in custody, has criminal past

Posted: Updated:

BRADLEY COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- The search is over on for a man charged with murdering his wife.

David Daugherty was found late Thursday afternoon in Cherokee, North Carolina.

Daugherty is accused of murdering his wife Elizabeth Carney in their Bradley County home and he has killed before.

Daugherty spent years in prison for the murder of Larry McKinney in 1990.

McKinney's widow said when her husband's killer got out of prison she could barely sleep at night.

Daugherty is charged with first degree murder, in Carney's murder.

It was in a field off Waterville Highway where police say over 20 years ago, Daugherty killed McKinney.

Court records show Daugherty tried to sell McKinney a stolen pistol, which would eventually be the murder weapon.

McKinney, who ran a used car lot, told Daugherty several times to leave that day. Daugherty would later return and shoot McKinney in the back.

Fast forward to Wednesday, and now another family is grieving. Police say they found certain evidence inside Carney's home that point Daugherty as the killer.

"As a result of that they believe they had probable cause to file charges," says Gault.

Daugherty was sentenced to 8 years in prison for manslaughter and theft, in McKinney's death.
