Mocs take 4th in Collegiate Bass Fishing Open

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (SUBMITTED) - Congratulations to UTC Mocs Bass Anglers Robby Crosslin, James Childers, Trent Huie, Caleb Clements, Taylor Massingill, and Alex Craw for placing fourth out of 38 teams (32 different schools) at the 2011 Boat U.S Collegiate Bass Fishing Open on June 29-30th at Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee.

This unique event featured a true team format that allowed teammates to share information and work together to amass the largest amount of weight possible over two days of competition.

The winning team was determined by the combined weight of each team's top two boats each day with each boat bringing in a 3 fish limit.  A team could consist of up to three boats and UTC sent two different teams to compete in this event.  The Mocs' second team consisted of Taylor Bolton, Cliff Dye, Parker Bacon, & Kris Lape.

On Day 1, Massingill & Craw weighed in 12.46 lbs including a 5.81 lb largemouth.  This put the Mocs in 6th place with a total of 21.13 lbs.

Bolton & Dye brought in a 9.95 lb three fish limit anchored by a 5.30 lb largemouth.  This put them in 23rd place after the first day of competition.   On the second day of competition, Crosslin & Childers brought in two bass that weighed 10.11 lbs, including a giant 7.54 lb largemouth that Robby landed from the back of the boat.  This gave Crosslin the Berkley Big Bass Award as this was the biggest fish weighed in by all contestants on Day 2.  This is a tremendous feat considering the field consisted of 170 college anglers and Crosslin fished the event out of a wheelchair.

Crosslin & Childers landed the fish around 1:15 PM and quickly called teammates Massingill & Craw to let them know they had caught a big one and needed two more keepers to fill out their three fish limit.  Craw & Massingill had been catching small keepers most of the day and told them to pull right in next to them so they could try to finish out their limit. When Crosslin & Childers arrived at 1:45 PM, Craw threw them the exact lures they had been catching fish with and Massingill had put out a marker buoy so they knew what area the fish were holding.  Minutes later, Childers landed their second keeper just in time to make it back for the weigh in at 2:15 PM without incurring any late penalties.  That fish was the difference maker that secured the Mocs Bass Anglers a Top 5 finish!

The Mocs finished in 4th place with a total two-day weight of 38.79 pounds.  The team was awarded $500 as well as $250 in gift cards from Cabela's.  The other Mocs team moved up 9 spots on Day 2 to finish in 14th place with 27.64 lbs.  UTC's 4th place finishing team was the best among 7 Tennessee colleges and 10 Tennessee teams.  Both UT-Chattanooga teams placed higher than UT-Knoxville, Tennessee Tech, MTSU, UGA, UK, and Auburn.   This event was filmed by the Versus Outdoors Network (a part of NBC Sports) and will air on Versus on Sunday afternoons starting July 31st.  Complete results can be found at:

The Mocs would like to thank all of their great sponsors for making this trip possible: Moonpie, Triton Boats, Choo Choo Lures, Joe's Custom Rods, Coca Cola, Industrial Boiler & Mechanical, Tackle Warehouse, Berkley, The Bass Federation (TBF), Tony Sanders Outdoors, Costa Del Mar, Yank-um Custom Tackle, and UTC's Department of Campus Recreation.
