Fireworks: Are they legal?

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Like most of us, you're probably getting ready for the Independence Day holiday, but should fireworks be included on your shopping list?

It all depends on where you live.

Here's a breakdown of firework laws throughout the area:

Hamilton County - all fireworks are illegal. That includes the cities of Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Soddy Daisy and Signal Mountain.

Bradley County – legal to purchase and shoot off fireworks.

Georgia state law: sparklers, glow snakes, glow worms are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, sparklers with 100+ grams of explosives and mortars or torpedoes are illegal.

Whitfield County – sparklers, glow snakes, glow worms are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, sparklers with 100+ grams of explosives and mortars or torpedoes are illegal.

Bledsoe County - legal to purchase and shoot off fireworks.

Catoosa County - sparklers, glow snakes, glow worms are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, sparklers with 100+ grams of explosives and mortars or torpedoes are illegal. All fireworks must be purchased in the State of Georgia.

Ft. Oglethorpe – fireworks are illegal.

Lafayette – fireworks are illegal.

Rhea County – permit required from fire chief if you live within city limits.

If in doubt, contact your local city hall, police department or sheriff's office for clarification of local fireworks laws.

Of course, you can also go to one (or more) of the fireworks displays hosted by cities and businesses throughout the area.

Children should never be left unattended with fireworks. All fireworks, even sparklers and worms, can cause serious injuries.

Remember to secure your pets before the fireworks start. Dogs can be spooked by the fireworks and run off.
