CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – As Eyewitness News first reported Wednesday, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger has named Mike Compton as his Chief of Staff.

"Mike Compton will bring a new dimension to Hamilton County Government. I've known Mike for many years and worked closely with him when we both served Senator Bob Corker in his role as Chattanooga's Mayor. I found Mike to be an inventive, goal driven administrator who is always eager to find solutions to challenges," Mayor Coppinger said in a release Thursday.

Compton will succeed Jeannine Alday, who retired earlier this month after 33 years of employment by the county.  The appointment would be in the form of a resolution, which is expected to be approved by County Commissioners.

Compton was Chief of Staff for Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker from 2001 until 2005.  He has most recently served as Chief Administrative Officer of Walden Security in Chattanooga.

At the time of her retirement, Ms. Alday was paid an annual salary of $142,116.  A proposed salary for Compton has not yet been announced.

Compton also brings a wealth of business experience to Hamilton County Government having served with the Corker Group for 18 years. Not only was Compton responsible for corporate finances, but he was a key member of the group's management team that leased over a million square feet of high rise office buildings, warehouses and retail leasing centers. Additionally, Compton played a major role in Chattanooga's two largest private real estate acquisitions.

Compton says he is excited to have the opportunity to return to public service. "I'm eager to work with Mayor Coppinger. We have a relationship that stretches back quite some time. I have long admired his leadership skills after working with him on a number of budgets in a previous administration. I know the diligence and commitment the mayor brings to his office every day, and I am excited about the opportunity to play a role in this administration as we continue to move forward creating a better Hamilton County."

Mayor Coppinger adds, "These are qualities that made Mike Compton stand out as I went through this selection process. Mike also brings a great depth of knowledge from his dealings in the private sector, working with small businesses to help further the bridge we are creating of economic prosperity for all Hamilton County businesses, large or small. To sum it up, Mike has the diversity of skills that are paramount to the responsibilities of a Chief of Staff."
