MARIETTA, GA. (NBC) - The NBC affiliate in Atlanta reports a Cobb County woman was killed early Saturday evening when her car was crushed by a falling tree while she was traveling on Powers Ferry Road at Saint James Walk.

According to Cobb County Police Sergeant Dana Pierce, Shufen Yang, 55, of Marietta was pronounced dead at the scene when her Honda Accord was cleared of debris. The victim drove directly into the path of the falling tree and was killed instantly, Pierce said.

Witnesses say the driver slammed on her brakes while trying to avoid the tree but heavy rain and dark conditions likely made it impossible for her to see what was ahead of her until it was too late.

Yang was the second woman in the metro-area whose car was struck by a falling tree Saturday.
