ROME, GA. (AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old boy was in critical condition after being struck in the head by a tree, which snapped and fell on him as he swam in a northwest Georgia creek just south of Rome.

Cade Maynor's mother told the Rome News-Tribune the boy was in surgery Friday afternoon at a Chattanooga hospital.

Authorities said Cade was swimming Thursday in waist-high water in Silver Creek, near a tree that held a rope swing.

Witnesses said that after someone jumped off the swing and into the water, the tree snapped and hit the boy in the head.

Authorities say he was taken by helicopter to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, where he was undergoing surgery.
