Haslam talks economy at judge's conference in Chattanooga

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam has told a meeting of Tennessee judges that the state's recovery from the recession will take several years.

Speaking Wednesday to about 170 judges in Chattanooga, Haslam said he is encouraged that there is even slow revenue growth after three years of decline but it will be 2014 before state revenues reach the 2007 level.

He said there is still about $160 million in 1-time federal stimulus money in the leaner $30.5 billion budget just approved for fiscal 2012.

Haslam said his legislative successes include making it tougher for teachers to get tenure and helping block a push to have voters pick state Supreme Court and appeals court judges.

The Republican governor said judges shouldn't have to go through statewide election campaigns.
