EAST RIDGE, TN. (WRCB)-- East Ridge's Thrippence Apartments may bear the marks of age, and rougher times; litter fills some breezeways and boards cover some windows.
But Larry Hedgecoth is happy to call them home. And glad to call Temika and LaBryant McClendon his downstairs neighbors.
"They've always been outgoing, and nice and their kids have been well-behaved," says Hedgecoth.
But torn crime scene tape and a blood-stained curb make clear that the McClendon's apartment, #106, saw trouble hours earlier.
"I woke up about 3:00 AM and saw six or seven East Ridge Police cars," says Hedgecoth.
Temika McClendon was lying in the breezeway. She was taken to Erlanger Medical Center in critical condition.
"She was suffering from large cut across her neck," says East Ridge Police Public Information Officer Erik Hopkins. "And blood was coming from her mouth."
Neighbors suspected her husband and told officers he was paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. Officers searched their apartment, and found a torn window screen.
LaBryant McClendon was on the pavement two stories below.
"If was an attempted escape or an attempt to harm himself, we don't know," says Hopkins.
Police took him to Erlanger for treatment first. He's now in the Hamilton County Jail on $75,000 bond, charged with attempted murder.
"Doesn't make any sense to me," says Hedgecoth. "We're praying of them and hope everything comes out and she gets well. And he gets straight in court."
McClendon is due in court Tuesday.
Neighbors say Temika McClendon has two children. Both are in the custody of other family members.
The holiday season is officially here. Thieves consider this to be the perfect time for stealing.
