Survivors of fatal blaze meet firefighters who saved them

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -- A bittersweet reunion as Brandy Curry shared hugs with the Chattanooga Firefighters who saved her life in February.

She was babysitting two-year-old Antonio Jackson and his 14-month old sister, Destiny, on Maude Street when the home caught fire.

Antonio survived, but his sister died at the hospital.

Curry's arms and legs still bear the severe burns she suffered in the fire.

"I have to get over it and know that one day it will be fine," said Curry. "You just have to look at it and say, 'I saved those kids'."

When firefighters arrived, they said witnesses told them the worse was in store.

Captain Tally Glover said, "Someone said they heard a child screaming, so they we knew there was someone inside."

Dispatch calls reveal as each person was saved.

Chattanooga Firefighter Brandon Atkins said he followed a hose line through the home and felt Antonio's body on the bedroom floor.

After rescuing the toddler, he went back in.

Atkins said, "I was still in search mode and that is when I got on the bed and found the second victim."

That was when the 14-month-old was taken from the burning home.

Curry was airlifted to a burn center in Augusta, Georgia.

For Chattanooga Firefighter Michael Battle, it was a life-changing ordeal.

"I'm overjoyed we saved everybody, but we lost someone and that is something you never forget," said Battle.

Curry said she doesn't remember much from that day, but said she is forever grateful to the men who put their lives on the line, to save hers.

"I wouldn't change anything because these babies didn't get burned," said Curry. "They aren't going through what I'm going through and I would do it again."
