CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – For the first time ever, Chattanooga Police will have an optional summer uniform.

Chief Bobby Dodd approved a new uniform for all officers this summer.

"The weather here in Chattanooga is hot and humid," says Police Sergeant Charlie Brown. "He noticed a lot of other agencies across the country were going to it."

The new uniform includes shorts, sneakers and a cotton polo with the badge embroidered onto the shirt.

"In 19 years this is the most comfortable I've been wearing a vest," says Sgt. Brown. "You don't have to worry about your badge or your nameplate falling off because of the embroidery. You just move a lot easier."

Sergeant Brown says the one supplier that is providing the new uniforms for the CPD has been overwhelmed with orders.

The new uniform is optional for both men and women from April through September.

"You'll probably see a ton of them at Riverbend," adds Sgt. Brown.
