Ringgold couple lives at campground after tornado

Posted: Updated:

RINGGOLD, GA.  (WRCB)  --  Cleanup and rebuilding continues throughout the Tennessee Valley more than one month after deadly storms claimed dozens of lives and demolished communities.

People with destroyed homes seek shelter in tents, shelters and local campgrounds.

One Ringgold family, living at KOA on Memorial Day, works to rebuild.

Laura and John McCulley are used to camping.  After retiring they bought an R.V. and traveled cross-country for 3 years. This time, under much different circumstances, the couple says camping hasn't been fun at all.

"We built a home, then sold everything moved into our motor home and traveled for about 3 years," says John McCulley.

It was what they always wanted to do.

Laura McCulley said, "It's not nearly as fun since we're forced to live in a camping trailer."

For the last month KOA in Ringgold has been the couple's home thanks to a borrowed R.V. from some friends.

It's been difficult to say the least for the couple.  "It's a little cramped," says John McCulley.

The EF-4 tornado that hit Ringgold ripped the roof off their house.

"We're trying to be patient," says Laura McCulley.

"Trying to be patient that's the main thing," echoes John.

The McCulley's are doing their best to stay positive, but everyday gets more difficult.  Their extended camping trip won't be over any time soon.

"It's gonna be another month, maybe longer," says John McCulley.
