WINCHESTER, FRANKLIN COUNTY (WRCB) – Rescue crews are working to free a Huntsville man from a cave in Franklin County.

Franklin County Sheriff's spokesperson Sergeant Chris Guess says the 51-year-old man fell 15-20 feet into Sinking Cove Cave Sunday afternoon while exploring with a group of cavers.

Sgt. Guess says the man was about 2000 feet underground when the incident happened around 3:00 pm.

The Knox County Cave and Vertical Rescue team was dispatched to the rescue early Monday morning. Crews from the city of Chattanooga, along Hamilton and Walker counties are assisting 60 volunteers with the rescue.

Sgt. Guess says the man has broken bones and injuries to his back, pelvis, and wrist.

Due to the narrow entrance, rescue crews are cutting rock to access the victim.

A Medflight helicopter is on standby to transport the victim to a local hospital once he is removed.
