Road work halted for Memorial Day holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The road ahead will be clear of construction in Tennessee for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will halt road-building projects at noon on Friday through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

TDOT Commissioner John Schroer says his department wants to keep traffic moving for a safe holiday weekend but cautions that lower speed limits where lanes are altered in work zones will be enforced.

The American Automobile Association expects a nearly 12% increase from 2010 in the number of people who will travel at least 50 miles from home over the weekend. More than 600,000 of them will go by car.
