NW Georgia unemployment still higher than state, country

Posted: Updated:

DALTON (WRCB) - Georgia labor officials say unemployment in Northwest Georgia remains higher than the state average.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for the region was unchanged for April at 10.2 percent. Statewide, the unemployment rate for Georgia is 9.9 percent.

The situation is even more serious, though starting to improve, when looking specifically at the Dalton metropolitan area.  In Dalton, April unemployment is at 11.1 percent, down from 11.5 percent in March.

State officials say the rate decreased because there were 800 new jobs added in the metro Dalton area in April, mostly in the service-related industries, including business and professional services, trade, and with local government.

This is the 43rd month in a row that Georgia's unemployment rate exceeded the national average. For April, the US unemployment rate was 9.0 percent.
