Legislation to remove cap on charter schools headed for a vote

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE (WRCB/AP) - A proposal that would remove the cap on charter schools in Tennessee is headed for floor votes in both chambers.

Charter schools are funded with state and local tax dollars but don't have to meet some of the state regulations regular schools do as they try to find different ways to improve student learning.

Under current law, the number of charter schools is capped at 90 statewide.

There are currently 40 in all, including 3 in Hamilton County.

Besides removing the cap, the legislation also allows any student in the charter school's jurisdiction to attend
