NASHVILLE (WRCB/AP) Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam says it would be "disingenuous" for him to support efforts to kill a tax break for Amazon.com.
There are bills in the state legislature that would require Amazon to collect sales tax in Tennessee.
Former Governor Phil Bredesen made the deal with Amazon, allowing items sold through new distribution centers in Hamilton and Bradley Counties to be exempt from Tennessee sales tax.
Governor Haslam told reporters Tuesday he stands behind the deal.
Amazon says if Tennessee agrees to keep the sales tax agreement, they could build as many as five fulfillment centers in the state, meaning thousands of jobs for Tennesseans. The first two facilities are being built in Hamilton and Bradley County.
Amazon began taking applications for jobs at the new fulfillment centers on Monday.
