Obama declares disaster in Tennessee

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- Federal funding is on the way for nine Tennessee counties plagued by weather-related problems since the beginning of April.

Monday, President Obama declared a major disaster exists in Chester, Davidson, Decatur, Dickson, Henderson, Humphreys, Lake, Shelby, and Sumner counties, which saw severe storms, flooding, tornadoes, and straight-line winds on April 4th.

The declaration makes federal funding available to State and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged.

FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security named W. Montague Winfield as the Federal Coordinating Officer for the recovery operations in the affected area.

FEMA said additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
