Ringgold closed again

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA. (WRCB)-- The City of Ringgold has been closed again to prevent delays for relief crews. The city was reopened at 7:30 am Sunday, but heavy traffic hindered relief efforts.

The following was released Catoosa County Joint Information Center:

Ringgold has returned to closing access to the city after a decision was made at 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning to release the checkpoints leading into the city to allow residence, business owners/workers, and contractors to flow freely in and out of the city.

According to Catoosa County Major Gary R. Sisk, at 2 p.m. traffic in the City of Ringgold became so heavy from onlookers, the public works vehicles could not remove debris, electric contractors could not complete their work, and emergency personnel had difficulty responding to needs within Ringgold.

"Therefore the checkpoints had to be put back in place to clear the congestion within the city and limit access," he said. "We are asking that once the city access is unlimited that onlookers please stay away.

"There is still a lot of work that needs to be done and workers need to be able to move about freely" he said. "We understand the desire to see the devastation, but we are sure individuals would not want to hinder clean up or the efforts to assist those in need by endangering the safety of those working."
