CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Hamilton County emergency officials say they were lucky the storm hit when it did.

That's because they had extra hands on deck.

The storm hit right at shift change, meaning both first and second shift dispatchers were answering the more than 1,400 calls between 2:00 and 4:00 Monday afternoon.

On an average, "busy" day, dispatchers say they will answer about 2,000 in a 24 hour period.

At one time, dispatchers had 116 active calls.

Officials say only 26 calls went unanswered on the first attempt.
