ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Voters in Dalton and Whitfield County could decide in November 2012 whether to merge their city and county governments.
At a meeting Saturday in Athens, the Dalton City Council and the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners agreed to ask the Georgia General Assembly to create a commission to draft a new charter for a consolidated metro government.
The charter would include details on how the new government would be run and services it would provide. The charter would then be submitted to local lawmakers to introduce as a bill in the General Assembly.
The possible merger was discussed among city and county leaders and experts from the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Local Government.
