What is Brittle Bones Disease?

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - ABC just announced the Sharrock family, of Rossville, Georgia, as the benefactors of Big Hearts: Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

One of the reasons the family was selected for the Home Makeover is because of the challenges 9-year-old, Patrick Sharrock, faces everyday.

Patrick suffers from a rare genetic condition called osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), more commonly known as Brittle Bones Disease.

According the National Institutes of Health, OI is a genetic disorder that causes weak bones that break easily in addition to other symptoms.

There is currently no cure for OI, but symptoms can be managed with a healthy lifestyle, medication, or surgery.

In his short life, Patrick Sharrock has already suffered 59 broken bones.

The family's 50-year-old crumbling home is a hazard for 9-year-old Patrick.

Sunday morning, the Home Makeover design team told the Sharrock family that Patrick will have a safe environment to call home for the rest of his life.
