Body found in E. Tenn. barrel may be missing Monroe man

MOUNT VERNON, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities are awaiting confirmation that a body found in a barrel in a Monroe County sinkhole is a 37-year-old North Carolina man missing since 2009.

According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, Graham County, N.C., Sheriff Mickey Anderson suspects the remains in the 55-gallon barrel are those of David Shannon Sawyer. Foul play is suspected in his death.

Anderson said the sinkhole was excavated as a follow-up to leads.

Sawyer lived in Graham County, which is along the Tennessee border in western North Carolina.

The sheriff said several suspects have been questioned, but no one has been charged in the disappearance.
