CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Two people have died in the first fatality in Hamilton County of 2011.

The accident happened about 5:15 pm Tuesday, in the 6800 block of Highway 60, near the intersection of Highway 58.

Traffic investigators found that two vehicles were involved, a 2000 GMC truck and a 1996 Ford Mustang.

"The east bound vehicle veered over into the path of the west bound vehicle," says Captain Charles Lowery Jr. with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

The truck was traveling east bound on Highway 60 and crossed over into the path of the Ford Mustang traveling west bound, the crash was head on.

The truck ended up off the shoulder, into the embankment. The driver was taken to Erlanger by ambulance.

The mustang continued into the tree-line. One occupant was wearing a seatbelt, the other was not. Both were killed in the wreck.

"Does not appear to be and alcohol related, it does not appear to right now to be any type of high speed situation. Does not appear to be as far as any drugs are concerned but that is pending because we'll do a blood test and everything of that sort," says Captain Lowery.

The driver of the GMC Ford truck was transported to Erlanger Hospital by Hamilton County Emergency Medical Service with non-life threatening injuries.

"This is our first and it is a double fatality but this is our first. We went through the entire month of January. This is the first we've had since October of last year," says Captain Lowery.

The Sheriff's Office credits that to an increase in enforcement and running radar. A move they'll continue.

The investigation of this crash is on going. The victims' names have not yet been released.
