War-torn family receives new Habitat Home

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-- Saturday marked a new beginning for a family who escaped tribal wars in Somalia, and now call Chattanooga home.

The Abobaker family finally got a look at their new home, built by Habitat for Humanity.

Fatmeh Abobaker says her husband was first to escape because men were first to be killed.

She and her children were separated from him for more than a year.

The whole family applied to come to America and arrived in Chattanooga two years ago.

With five children and one on the way, the family says the home is greatly needed.

"So different, this new house, clean house. The baby is coming and everything is clean," says Fatmeh Abobaker.

This is the second of seven earthcraft certified Habitat Homes to be built in the Chattanooga area.

All are energy efficient.
