DUNLAP, SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -- Investigators are digging to find out who murdered a 55-year-old Bledsoe County man and why. The more they dig the more bizarre the story becomes.

"Later in the evening, we began to put the pieces of the puzzle together and it was tied to the same person," says Sequatchie County Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock.

That same person was Clifford Carden, Jr, his nickname is Roddy.

A man collecting cans found Carden's body Thursday morning, under Picket Bridge in the Sequatchie River. Investigators say he likely died from head trauma.

"It's a tragedy for sure, we don't know what stemmed it," says Hitchcock.

That was about three hours after a man found a torched 1996 Monte Carlo, in the woods near his home. At the time investigators hadn't made the connection, that burned car belonged to Carden.

"The car was noticed by someone 3who lived on a ridge about where the victim was spotted when he came out that morning, smelled a funny odor and came, came down the hill and smelled the car," says Hitchcock.

Hitchcock says the car but has been scoured for evidence. While detectives are working two crime scenes, they have a slew of unanswered questions.

"We don't know why this happened who is involved and you asked me and there was no record... so apparently he wasn't a too bad of a person," says Hitchcock.

They're looking for help piecing together the timeline. They know Carden was likely dumped under the bridge sometime between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning around 10 am.

"Some family talked to him Wednesday after lunch," says Hitchcock.

Police ask if anyone has seen him from February 2nd to February 3rd, please call the Sequatchie County Sheriff's Department at 423-949-7750.
