CHATTANOOGA. (WRCB) -- A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7am EST Friday for Cumberland, Grundy, and Van Buren counties in TN and for Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield counties in GA.

A winter weather system is expected to approach the Tennessee Valley tonight and may bring minor snow accumulations mainly to the high elevations of the Channel 3 viewing area.

Precipitation should begin as rain this evening and change to snow as temperatures fall closer to freezing.  Little to no snow accumulation is expected in Chattanooga or other valley spots.  Light accumulations are possible in north Georgia.  Some computer models are hinting at snow totals of 0.5"-1.0" in some of the higher terrain of southeast Tennessee as well as western North Carolina.  Slick roads will develop so please travel carefully.  Further north and west some high elevations may get snowfall of 2" or more.

Snow should end before daybreak Friday with dry and very cold conditions the rest of the day.

The Storm Alert 3 Team will monitor this forecast track and keep you updated online and on-air. You can discuss winter weather other with Channel 3 Facebook fans at Download our iPhone, iPad, and Droid apps by searching "WRCB". Blackberries and other phones can view our mobile site at
