SUMMERVILLE, CHATTOOGA COUNTY, GA (WRCB) -- A long-time former north Georgia sheriff will be laid to rest Thursday.

Ralph Kellet lost his battle with colon cancer on Tuesday.

The 66 year old served as Chattooga County Sheriff for 17 years, before his defeat in 2008.

Kellet had the second longest run as sheriff, just behind his life-long friend Gary McConnell.

Kellet's family will receive friends Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm at Mason Funeral Home.

His funeral will be held at 2pm Thursday at South Summerville Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch or South Summerville Baptist Church.
