CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a blaze in a high-rise Tuesday.

Fire officials say the cause of the blaze at Boynton Terrace Apartments is under investigation.

One of the apartments in the building was under construction. A construction worker says he accidentally a foam rubber seal on a heating unit while working with a cutting torch.

The worker tells fire investigators he ran to get a bucket of water, but by the time he returned the blaze was too larger. Construction crews also attempted to use a fire extinguishers, but were unable to control the flames.

When firefighters arrived at 959 Boynton Drive, they quickly evacuated the first and second floors of the eight story building. Residents on the upper floors were able to get out on their own, according to firefighters.

Two people were treated at the scene by Hamilton County EMS; one for smoke inhalation, the other for a pre-existing condition.

Six fire crews were initially called to the scene, but firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one apartment. Residents were allowed to re-enter the building about an hour later.

An apartment manager says there are 84 residents in the building.
