Chattanooga to host 3 major sporting events

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Chattanooga has been named host city for several major sporting events.

Tuesday, the Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee has announced that the city will host the 2014 Amateur Athletic Union 7th Grade Basketball National Championships and the 2013 and 2015 USSSA Black American World Tournaments.

The three events are expected to bring a combined $4.6 million to the area.

Chattanooga competed against 16 cities for the right to host one of the Amateur Athletic Union tournaments.

According to CESC, over 100 basketball teams from across the country will come to the Scenic City in July 2014.

The tournament games will be at arenas across the city, including University of Tennessee Chattanooga's McKenzie Arena, Maclellan Gymnasium, and the Aquatic Recreation Center; Chattanooga State Community College; The Baylor School; Girls Preparatory School; and Tennessee Temple University.

The city expects the AAU tournament to bring in over $1.6 million during the six day it will be in Chattanooga. CESC says the basketball programs in the city have brought in $5.6 million in the past five years.

More than two hundred softball teams will also come to Chattanooga for the 2013 and 2015 USSSA Black American World Tournament.

These tournaments will be staged at the Summit of Softball, Camp Jordan and Jack Mattox Fields. 

Softball events in Hamilton County have had a $18.2 million economic impact over the past five years. The 2013 and 2015 USSSA Black American World Tournament is expected to bring a combined $3 million to the region.

The AAU 7th Grade Basketball National Championships will be held July 13-18, 2014.

The 2013 USSSA Black American World Championship will be held August 23-25, 2013. The 2015 World Championship will be August 28-30, 2015.
