DALTON, WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - A man wanted for killing his estranged wife took his own life before authorities could arrest him.

According to the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina law enforcement notified local authorities of a murder suspect possibly being in the North Georgia area.

The suspect, identified as 42 year-old John Fred Stanley, was reportedly driving a Honda Accord.

Stanley is accused for killing his estranged wife in Cherokee, North Carolina on New Year's Eve.

According to a press release, the victim was driven to her workplace by her sister. As she was getting out of the vehicle, Stanley pulled up in another vehicle and started shooting at her.

The woman died from gunshot wounds.

When officers received a tip that Stanley may be staying on Fannie Street in Whitfield County, they went to check it out. The officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the Honda in a driveway of a home. Authorities say the home belongs to an acquaintance of Stanley's.

Authorities say Stanley fled the scene on foot when officers arrived. They chased Stanley across an open field and into a wooded area off Old Rome Road.

Stanley reportedly shot himself in the head when officers closed in. He was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the firearm Stanley used was a 38 caliber revolver. It is believed to be the same gun he used to kill his wife. The gun has been taken by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as evidence.
