Dozens employ New Year's Eve tax hours in Cleveland

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND, TN. (Times Free Press) — So many people took advantage of the opportunity to pay their property taxes on the last day of 2010 that the Bradley County Trustee's office collected more than half a million dollars.

The county trustee's office and the Cleveland Finance Department kept regular business hours on New Year's Eve — something that has not happened in the past — and both experienced a steady stream of taxpayers all day.

The county office alone collected more than $533,000, said Trustee Mike Smith.

"I might have been surprised,'' said Smith, "but we were just covered up with phone calls yesterday. People were checking to see if we would really be open today.''
