DALTON, WHITFIELD COUNTY (WRCB) - A six-year-old died this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a head-on collision Thursday night.

According to Georgia State Police Sergeant Daniel Pallock, the crash happened around 6:00 p.m. on Dawnville Road.

Sergeant Pallock says a Toyota Carolla driven by an 18-year-old male driver crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a Honda Accord, carrying a Chattsworth family of four, head-on.

The driver of the Carolla as well as his passenger and a 6-year-old boy from the Accord were taken by Life Force to Erlanger Medical Center.  The other three victims from the Accord were taken to area hospitals.

The 6-year-old died as a result of his injuries early Friday morning.

Sergeant Pallock says the driver remains in critical condition after surgery. The other two were treated for minor injuries, but remain at the hospital.

Georgia State Police say everyone involved were properly wearing seat belts and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Lower Dawnville Road near Polly Rd was shut down due to a head-on collision.

Dispatchers tell Eyewitness News three Life Force helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

"There was a helicopter landing, one taking off. There was an ambulance down the road here at the carpet mill right there , fire trucks everywhere," according to witness Shannon Snipes.

There are reports of several people in critical condition.

Georgia State Police are working the crash.
