Chattanooga among communities in rating project

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga is among nine communities that will develop a software measurement tool that will rate cities as they compete for new residents, investment, economic development and government grants.

The STAR rating system is being developed by a coalition of local governments, the National League of Cities and the Green Building Council.

Atlanta, St. Louis, Boulder, Colo., and the District of Columbia are among communities that are also paying $25,000 to participate.

The director of Chattanooga's Office of Sustainability, David Crockett, said in a statement that the STAR Community Index is intended to help develop more energy efficient and sustainable cities. He compares it to LEED certification as a roadmap for buildings to be more cost effective, energy efficient and healthier.
