MCMINN COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - McMinn County Sheriff's Officers charged a 17 year-old McMinn County High School student with possessing a handgun on school property.
The incident began at approximately 345PM, on Tuesday, when High School administrators received information from a group of students that a 17-year old student had left campus during the afternoon and returned after school with a handgun.
When school officials approached the juvenile suspect in front of the school, he ran off campus toward an apartment complex where he lives with his father.
McMinn County Sheriff's Officers arrived, and along with Athens City Police located the juvenile suspect at his apartment. After a brief search, a handgun was found in the residence which matched the description of the weapon that was reported to the school administration.
School officials also reviewed security video tapes of an encounter between the suspect and a group of students that seemed to support statements given by witnesses. It did not appear that the weapon was ever inside the school building.
The weapon was retained by MCSO detectives, and the 17 year-old suspect will face charges through Juvenile Court. He is in custody until a Friday court date.
"The safety of our schools is a priority for both the McMinn County Sheriff's Department as well as our Board of Education," said Sheriff Joe Guy. "We work closely together to provide programs to prevent dangerous behavior as well as to respond to incidents that potentially threaten safe schools. Locating our suspect so quickly is a result of the immediate cooperation between school administrators and law enforcement."
MCSO Detectives continue to investigate the incident, and additional officers were present Wednesday at the high school.
