Investigators say recruiter admitted to slayings

MANCHESTER, TN. (AP) - Authorities say a former Army recruiter admitted to killing his girlfriend and then watching cartoons with her two young sons before killing them, too.

During a preliminary hearing in Manchester on Friday, Coffee County district attorney investigator Billy Cook testified that Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Perkins admitted to the killing of Stephanie Hershman and her two sons in September.

Sheriff's investigator Lauren Nettles said she found the bodies of 26-year-old Hershman and the boys, ages 1 and 3, stuffed in trash bags inside her bedroom closet, according to testimony reported by WSMV-TV.

The 30-year-old Perkins was assigned as an Army recruiter in Tullahoma since 2008.
