ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Alabama and Michigan State are heading to the Capital One Bowl. The two powerhouse programs accepted invitations Sunday night to play on New Year's Day, setting up a matchup of teams that were hoping for higher-profile destinations this year.
Michigan State (11-1) shared the Big Ten title with Wisconsin and Ohio State. But there were only two spots for the conference in the BCS bowls, and the BCS standings were used to break the deadlock.
The Spartans are ranked 9th in the BCS behind No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 6 Ohio State. Instead, Michigan State's consolation prize is to face a team that had even loftier goals this year: the defending-national champion Crimson Tide (9-3).
The game is held at the Florida Citrus Bowl stadium in Orlando.
