Corker says unions could hurt VW assembly plant

NASHVILLE, TN. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Bob Corker says he has told Volkswagen officials having the United Auto Workers organize its the Chattanooga assembly plant would be "highly detrimental" to the German manufacturer.

Corker, R-Tenn., said the advice grew out of his experience during negotiations with the union during the 2008 federal bailout of GM and Chrysler.

Corker told The Chattanooga Times Free Press that he stressed he is not "anti-union" and said he often employed union craftsmen when he ran a construction company.

Bob King, president of the 400,000-plus-member labor union, said the UAW is interested in organizing the VW plant. King said Corker's comments are a reference to the past, not how the UAW operates now.
